In 2016, Architect Peter Marino produced the renewal of Luis Vuitton’s Soho store in New York. Mukai participated as the main collaborated artist and he created installation work entitled “Sky Space Earth” using pillars of the store with overflowing symbols. In the spring of 2017, world famous art collector Howard Rachofsky invited Mukai to his private museum ”The Warehouse”; where a certain part of exhibition space was put into the hands of Mukai. His expanding force of creative spheres knows no boundaries.
- SHUJI MUKAI
In1959, at the age of 19, Shuji Mukai met Jiro Yoshihara, founder and leader of GUTAI Art Association. Yoshihara highly appraised Mukai’s talent and Mukai became the youngest member of the group in 1961.
The characteristic of Mukai’s work consists in its innumerous symbols spread over the dimensions. Yoshihara commented on his works; “While appearing cool at first glance, intrinsic furious energies are lurked at the same time”. French critic, originator of Art Informel Michel Tapié also admired Mukai, which resulted in all of his works being purchased.
In 1964, Mukai’s works were exhibited at “New Japanese Painting and Sculpture” presented by MoMA New York, which toured the United States until 1967. Two works of them were added to the collection of MoMA by the curator William S. Liebermann.
In 1966, Mukai presented his first installation in Japan, using jazz café “Check”(Umeda, Osaka), where he filled the whole interior surface to the brim with his playful symbols.
In 1969, he put his huge scale happening in execution, in which he burnt all of his creations until then. This happening is executed as an extension of his principle “Art work is merely the excrement of creative action”. In the same year, he stopped creating art works and devoted himself to the activity as enterpriser. In 1991, he restarted his creation with the performing project “Transformation of phases”; where we can see proliferated symbols on the surface of pyramid-formed three-dimensional works.
Also he participated in the prominent exhibition “GUTAI: Splendid Playground” (Guggenheim New York; 2013); he developed his installation with symbols in the area of elevators and bathrooms inside of the museum. His ‘audience participated style’ performance at the opening event, where he depicted symbols together with young people, draw a lot of attention.
In 2014, Mukai co-worked with architect Tadao Ando in the project “ Playing with Symbols: Embellished Amphitheater (Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art). Consecutively, his solo exhibitions were held at the Nariwa Museum (Takahashi, Okayama) and Karuizawa New Art Museum (Karuizawa, Nagano). In the following year, he presented installation “Space of Signs Selfie Studio” (Palazzo Fortuny) an event of Venice Biennial.
