Since ancient times, Japanese people have held the believe that spirits dwell in all things. By paying reverence to these spirits through inori (prayer), they seek to calm their own soul, attain peace in everyday life, avoid disaster and harm, and attain happiness and prosperity.
In addition, art themed around Shinto and Buddhist deities has always served as a form of prayer throughout the ages, right up to the modern day.
For this exhibition, four contemporary artists showcase works expressing their own personal, contemporary takes on the ubiquitous theme of inori, showing this in a diverse array of different forms.
