Shin-hanga Masterpieces Exhibition
Jul. 28 (Thu.) →Aug.3 (Wed.)

Koka Yamamura Takashi Itou Shoson Ohara Koitsu Tsuchiya Kazuma Oda Shinsui Ito

The Ukiyo-e woodblock print genre is often said to have reached its end in the late Meiji Period, or start of the twentieth century.
During the first half of the twentieth century, however, Watanabe Shozaburo of the woodblock print shop S. WATANABE Woodcut Prints energetically pursued the creation of a new type of Ukiyo-e, with a strong focus on artistic expression. This new genre came to be called Shin-hanga, or "new woodblock prints," and depicted in highly individualistic style subjects such as scenery, beautiful women, actors, flowers and birds. These works have attracted attention from admirers all around the world in a way that only hand-crafted prints can, and many consider Shin-hanga to be a continuation of the old Ukiyo-e genre into the contemporary era.
In recent years, Shin-hanga have been showcased in numerous exhibitions throughout Japan and the rest of the world, exposing increasing numbers of people to the art form. For this exhibition and sales event, S. WATANABE Woodcut Prints has carefully selected, from among works collected from around the world, more than 30 early prints to showcase. We hope that you come and view this exhibition.
