"Manga Oribe" and "Shunga Oribe" (Oribe ware with manga and shunga erotic art themes) are terms that I coined. They are phrases I came up with about ten years ago, when copying sketches from Hokusai Manga (Hokusai's Sketches) onto ceramic vessels. I have used pictures from Utagawa Kuniyoshi and other Ukiyo-e woodblock print and painting artists on my vessels, incorporating images that I like personally as well as cultural elements to achieve my current works. Because pots and other such vessels, tea ceremony implements, flower vases and the like have curved forms, it's impossible to depict human forms with full accuracy, but I think that is what specifically makes such depictions so interesting. Moving forward, I plan to seek out more paintings and drawings that work with this style.
