Miki Kariya's art exudes the pure excitement and sense of unease we all experienced in our childhood, while also expressing a singular worldview stemming from an attachment to old things. Her one-of-a-kind textures, achieved by applying multiple layers of acrylic paint, shaving away, and polishing, impart a sense of depth to each work's story, resulting in images that are simultaneously dream-like and realistic in nature. In 2025, Kariya has decided to paint the things she likes in this world: houses, hydrangea flowers, butterflies, mushrooms, rabbits—all motifs to which she has personal attachments, thus enabling her to fill each piece with pure happiness. Driven by an unrelenting desire to paint everything she can think of, the artist gives birth to works which envelop the viewer in gentle kindness and feelings of marvel. This year, the artist is focused on painting and drawing the things she personally enjoys depicting. Through art fairs, solo exhibitions and other showings in Japan and beyond, you can experience for yourself the continually evolving world of Miki Kariya's art.
