This exhibition brings to the fore singular sensibilities and beauty with a focus on the ways in which contemporary Japanese pictorial art and Sculpture is viewed by people outside of Japan. It is here that we can see Eastern-style mentality and spirituality rooted in the climates, geographical features and cultures of Japan, as well as sights hidden away in everyday life. These present new types of beauty for people of the world to see, sometimes silently and sometimes with immense power. Paradise on Earth: The Aesthetics of the East presents the works of Japanese artists who embody these types of sensibilities. "Paradise on earth" refers to the Japanese Togenkyo ("The Peach Blossom Spring" originally from Chinese fable), which is quite similar in concept to the fictional Shangri-La. It is a utopian place far from the mundane world of daily life, and a symbol of beauty to which people have aspired since ancient times. The art shown here, much like the mythical Togenkyo, takes viewers up and away from reality, leaving behind pleasant reverberations deep inside their souls. This collection of various works with Eastern identities, shown together in combination, is more than mere representations of beauty; they provide modern-day viewers with opportunities to re-examine for themselves the true meaning of beauty as a concept. We hope you will stop by and experience the unique sensibilities of Japanese art, which intermingle with the wider world without losing themselves along the way.
