Despite its growing global popularity in recent years, many people say that they simply "don't understand" contemporary art. Sojiro Takamura makes it more accessible to viewers, harnessing traditional skills and techniques infused with uniquely Japanese precision and detail to communicate more intuitively through his works of contemporary art without sacrificing established visual conventions. Takamura has attracted widespread attention for his Cup Noodles series, which builds on the ideas behind the Campbell's Soup Cans series by modern artist Andy Warhol. In addition, he is an active participant in the Kudoyama Art Festival, Art Fair Tokyo, and other such festivals and events. In contrast, Daisuke Funaki, a graduate of the Tohoku University of Art & Design Graduate School, has garnered widespread praise for his three-dimensional art resulting from a pursuit of new possibilities in sculptures of human figures. He takes part in Japan's largest art event, the Japan Media Arts Festival hosted by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, and throughout his works Funaki utilizes irony-rich expression tied to era-specific characteristics while maintaining an unwavering focus on his Japanese identity. In addition, he is widely recognized for his efforts to popularize art in Japan through magazine publication, guest appearances on radio programs, and his founding of Art Studio Petite-Poupée, among other projects. This duo exhibition offers exciting looks at the energetic expression found in both pictorial and three-dimensional art.
