Shinya Tamai carries on the traditions of Japanese painting (Nihonga), using his artistic sensibilities and sophisticated techniques to energetically create and present his own unique worldview. He creates works primarily on Japanese paper (washi), hand-dyed with pigments to evoke the texture of classical Japanese paintings, using expressive ink lines and refined compositions. The motifs feature mythical animals that have long been cherished in Japanese folklore, such as dragons and phoenixes, as well as animals such as tigers, cranes, rabbits, goldfish, and frogs, which are anthropomorphized and depicted in a comical way. As the subtitle suggests, the exhibition emphasizes the color blue, showcasing a variety of pieces exploring blue themes including marine life, water, the sky, and blue animals.
