Day and night, light and shadow, reality and dreams. Anz Kanie embraces such dichotomies while expressing, through her pictures and words, the feelings and scenes which arise from the spaces in between. This exhibition features Kanie's latest art, resulting from close study of the fluctuations and changes encountered in day-to-day life and continuous exploration therein.

🔶ANZ KANIE
Painter and writer. Born in Tokyo. Member of the Japanese PEN Club. Chairperson of the NPO 3.11 Children’s Library.
Graduate of Jiyu no Mori Gakuen. Studied printmaking in London.
Has held solo exhibitions at art museums, department stores and galleries across Japan. Author of numerous books, including novels, picture books and essays.
In 2022, she provided artwork for a wrapped Toyota ‘MIRAI’ (Nagano Toyota). She has also undertaken numerous collaborations with companies, including the wrapping of BMW Japan’s eco-car ‘i3’, the Iriomote cat-themed decals on JTA (Japan Transocean Air) aircraft, and the confectionery shop ‘West’. Since the Great East Japan Earthquake, she has been involved in activities to deliver picture books and art supplies to children in the disaster-affected areas, and established ‘Niji Bunko’, a library specialising in picture books, in Soma City, Fukushima Prefecture. She serves as a coordinator for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Reconstruction Education Support Project, and is engaged in activities that connect children across the country with art. Her work with children in the disaster-affected areas was featured in the NHK BS1 Special ‘The 10-Year Promise: The “Future” Drawn by the Children of Fukushima’, a programme marking the 10th anniversary of the disaster. Furthermore, in recognition of all her activities to date, she received the Jury Special Prize at the ‘pen’ Magazine Creator Awards 2021 in the category ‘The Seven Most Brilliant Groups of 2021 Changing Japan and the World’. In 2023, her picture book *Hana Loves Snakes* (Fukuinkan Shoten) won the ‘14th Kindergarten Picture Book Grand Prize’ and was also shortlisted for the 27th Japan Picture Book Award. Her 2024 publication *I Want the Colour of That Sky* (Kawade Shobo Shinsha) (selected by the National School Library Association) became the most frequently featured book in the 2025 junior high school entrance examinations (Japanese language, narrative section). She also received the 74th Shogakukan Children’s Publishing Culture Award. Her picture book *Oi!* was listed in JBBY (Japan Board on Books for Young People)’s *Recommended! Children’s Books from Japan and Around the World 2026*.
