A silent exchange—a dialogue—awaits at the point where your gaze comes to rest. This exhibition, titled "eyes," is an inquiry into and exploration of the human gaze itself pursued through the act of painting, carried out here by four artists: Gekoru, Samehoshi, Yutaka Shimomura and Hyakunen. The motifs seen within their works are more than mere fictional constructs; they represent the ways in which the artists see and examine the world, as well as their efforts to convert those into strokes of the brush. They are earnest accumulations of awareness and perception. The eyes depicted on the canvas by each artist serve as proxies for their viewpoints, silently yet powerfully piercing back into the very essence of the viewer's existence. It leads one to suspect that the artwork which they intend to be viewing themself is in fact exposing them to the gaze of another imbued within the image. At the very moment the viewer's gaze crosses that of the image in which the artist's "eyes" have been infused, the initially flat image seems to take on three-dimensional depth and sway the viewer's emotions and memories in unexpected ways. This interplay of disparate gazes is at the core of this exhibition's underlying theme, and said interplay gives rise to an unadulterated means of exchange not requiring words. When your gaze intersects with that of the four artists' "eyes," what kinds of things will you experience in the space which lies between the pleasure and incongruity that come from looking and being looked at? We urge you to attend the exhibition and discover that answer for yourself.
