This exhibition, "Dawn Light on the Shimmering Sea" (kinpekishu o ugatsu in Japanese) centers on the Japanese moon goddess, Tsukuyomi, and depicts the realm of the night over which she has reign. Although Tsukuyomi is well known among those familiar with Japanese mythology, texts do not elaborate on her appearance and story. Therefore, I imagined for myself the countenance and aura of this mysterious goddess who watches over the cycles of life and serves as a symbol of change, as well as the world in which she dwells, and expressed them through painting. The word kinpekishu from the original Japanese for this exhibition's title refers to a scene of the glistening blue sea, which resembles a beautiful gemstone, as it is bathed in the light of the ascending morning sun. Just as the moon changes its form in response to the sun's light, I turn to Tsukuyomi in order to learn about the diverse forms of our world while also discovering more about myself. My works for this exhibition delve into my own views on ethics as well as life and death, while also embodying my modest spiritual beliefs.
